Asleep- Jet Lag

$16.00$29.00

Jet Lag, by the time you realize it’s gotten its talons into you, it’s generally too late – you’ve fallen asleep in a meeting, slept through your best friend’s wedding, missed a job interview or worse. The condition, known scientifically as desynchronosis, is the result of crossing time zones faster than your internal clock can keep up. While the condition is typically brought on by air travel, it actually has to do with what are known as Circadian rhythms, (the scientific term for the natural times our bodies are susceptible to falling asleep). According to sleep researchers, there are two peak times a day when these rhythms kick in, 3 am to 5 am and 3 pm to 5 pm. (Not surprisingly, research also shows there to be a disproportionate number of traffic accidents at those times – we said there was much worse than falling asleep at a meeting!)

So, what can you do to combat jet lag if you have a lengthy trip in your future? There are many who opt for a chemically assisted solution, i.e. popping a sleeping pill and drifting off to sleep once the plane has reached cruising altitude. Certainly this would ensure you get to your destination rested, but sleeping pills come with their own set of potential complications. Since my work, throughout my career, has necessitated travel throughout the US and parts of Europe, I’ve developed a number of methods for attempting to combating jet lag. One of these has always been to pack a blend of rooibos and chamomile for the journey. I like to bring a couple of tea sacs in my carry-on and infuse a cup once airborne. The herbal combo soothes the mind and body and provides the body with a good dose of vitamins and antioxidants, making my arrival a little more easy to deal with. In this version of our secret blend, we’ve added a dash of all natural caramel flavoring to help you drift off to dreamland. Simply brew, ease the seat back and enjoy.

Steeping Instructions

7-9 oz cup | 1 1/2 tsp |  212ºF |  3-5 min
IDEAL BREWING TEMPERATURE: 100ºC/212ºF
HOT BREWING METHOD:
Bring filtered or freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 slightly heaping teaspoon of loose tea for each 7-9oz / 200-260ml of fluid volume in the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 3-7 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time the stronger the tea).
ICED TEA BREWING METHOD (Pitcher): (To Make 1 Liter/Quart):
Place 6 slightly heaping teaspoons of loose rooibos or 6 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Using filtered or freshly drawn cold water, boil and pour 1¼ cups/315ml over the rooibos. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the brewed rooibos into your serving pitcher straining the rooibos or removing the bags. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced rooibos is to increase the strength of the hot rooibos brew since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water.
ICED TEA BREWING METHOD (Individual Serving):
Place 1 slightly heaping teaspoon of loose rooibos or 1 tea bag into a teapot for each serving required. Using filtered or freshly drawn cold water, boil and pour 6-7oz/170-200ml per serving over the rooibos. Cover and let steep for 5 minutes. Add hot rooibos herbal tea to a 12oz/375ml acrylic glass filled with ice, straining the rooibos or removing the bags. Not all of the tea will fit, allowing for approximately an additional ½ serving. Sweeten and/or add lemon to taste. A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced rooibos is to increase the strength of hot rooibos since it will be poured over ice and diluted.
